Polybutylene Failures

Over a period of time Polybutylene piping systems tend to fail. Based upon several scientific studies it appears that this failure may be caused by a combination of factors. Increased oxidation of pipe and fittings by chemicals like chlorine that cause materials to become brittle and prone to cracking. Metal fittings and plastic pipe with different expansion rates may cause connections to rupture or leak. It is also possible other issues like improper installation could somehow factor into the equation. The bottom line is that Polybutylene piping systems eventually weaken and fail. Some leaks may occur quickly, with substantial flooding, resulting in significant water damage to structures and personal property. While other leaks may  be more subtle, with slow unnoticed leaks behind closed walls and floors, that result in mold, mildew, and fungus damage.
