Why go green?
- Every living thing needs water to survive. In general, people can survive several weeks without food, but will not survive more than a few days without water.
- The earth's surface provides 70% water and 30% land. Of that water, 97% is salt water and less than 1% of it is fresh water we can drink. The small portion of fresh water that is available to us, competes with our need for fresh water for heating, cooling, agriculture, industrial processes, bathing, washing, cooking, and most importantly-drinking. There are processes available to remove salt from water but they are costly and difficult to use.
- A leaking faucet that drips one drop per second over the course of a year, wastes more than 2,000 gallons of fresh water during that year. An average family of four can choose replacement plumbing fixtures that are WaterSense certified and save about 39,000 gallons of fresh water a year. That is equivalent to 2,000 showers, or 1,950 loads of laundry, or 4,300 dishwasher cycles, or most importantly a lifetime of drinking water for three people.
- WaterSense certified plumbing fixtures have passed government EPA standards for water conservation AND maintain optimal plumbing performance, and in general function better than their higher water consumption counterparts. WaterSense certified plumbing fixtures must use 20% less water than other similar products, and offer no inconvenience, discomfort, health issues, safety issues, or lack of good hygiene.
