Gas DetectorsThese devices will sound an alarm if they detect gas in the air. They are especially helpful when placed in areas of the home that are rarely used and with residents who have a difficult time detecting the smell of gas. Most describe the smell of propane and natural gas as the smell of rotten eggs, the spray of a skunk, or the smell often associated with a dead animal. Sometimes typical propane gas smells are lessened by air, water or rust in the propane cylinder or tank, or from underground leaks. Choose a gas detector listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and follow the manufacturer's instructions when installing it. Gas detectors vary with the level of gas that will set off the alarm.
